Fr. Rick's New Years Resolution

Posted on January 19, 2020 in: Pastor's Thoughts

Dear Parishioners,

We’ve all heard it said that a new year means new opportunity and a fresh start.  I’ve also heard it shared that when we enter the New Year we need to reflect on our past, learn from it and move ahead; stronger, smarter and more determined.  The question I have, however, is what are we moving towards? Words are nice and encouraging and inspiring – but we need more than words – we need a plan and a goal otherwise we’re just talking the talk and not walking the walk.  And let’s face it, the last thing our world needs is another smooth talker that doesn’t back up his/her words.

So, where do we begin?  As Christians, we’re already ahead of the game since we don’t need to make up goals or objectives.  Sacred Scripture is very clear about the direction we need to travel.  Open the Good Book and let it be our guide.  Here are a few New Year’s inspirations that will help us be more secure in who we are – and who God intends us to be.

Jeremiah 29:11
'For I know the plans that I have for you,' declares the LORD, 'plans for welfare and not for calamity to give you a future and a hope.’
Isaiah 41:10
‘Do not fear, for I am with you; Do not anxiously look about you, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, surely I will help you, surely I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.’
Philippians 4:6
Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.
Proverbs 3:5-6
Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight.
Proverbs 2:6-9
For the LORD gives wisdom; from His mouth come knowledge and understanding. He stores up sound wisdom for the upright; He is a shield to those who walk in integrity, guarding the paths of justice, and He preserves the way of His godly ones. Then you will discern righteousness and justice and equity and every good course.
James 1:5
But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him.
Proverbs 16:9
The mind of man plans his way, But the LORD directs his steps.
Romans 8:28
And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.
Psalm 27:14
Wait for the LORD; be strong, and let your heart take courage; yes, wait for the LORD.
Deuteronomy 31:6
Be strong and courageous, do not be afraid or tremble at them, for the LORD your God is the one who goes with you. He will not fail you or forsake you.
Hebrews 10:22-23
Let us draw near with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful;
Galatians 6:9
And let us not lose heart in doing good, for in due time we shall reap if we do not grow weary.

Have a wonderful faith filled New Year everyone.

Peace,

Fr. Rick
