Pastor's Page - April

Posted on April 21, 2019 in: Pastor's Thoughts

Dear Parish family,

The month of April begins in the penitential season of Lent and ends in the joyful season of Easter.  Both seasons are deeply connected since we can’t have an Easter Sunday without first experiencing Good Friday.  I imagine if any outsider entered our Good Friday liturgy they would be confused by the hundreds of people coming forth to reverence the Cross.  Does it make sense that we would want to reverently touch and kiss the instrument of Jesus’ death?  John’s Gospel sheds light on this question when we read, “No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends” (Jn 15:13)  His suffering and death were done out of love for us.  The Catholic Catechism for Adults states that, “The Son of God, was sent by the Father to restore the harmony between himself and humanity that had been disrupted by sin.  He came to teach and show us love.”  That same love led Jesus to sacrifice his life on the Cross for our salvation.   We, therefore, humbly and lovingly reverence the cross on Good Friday - in awe of how far love was willing to go.

I hope that your Lenten journey has been a prayerful one and that you are able to enter Easter with hearts and minds open and receptive to His incredible Grace and mission.  Thank you for all you do for His Church and our community.

Peace,

Fr. Rick
